"A doula for every woman who wants one"*
Vision of DONA International
What I charge
I provide exceptional support to all my clients and my fee reflects that quality of professionalism and dedication. I've been trained by childbirth educators (Bradley Method and Hynobabies), very experienced doulas, and under the guidance of nurses, OBs and midwives. I continue to seek out continuing education classes and workshops to keep my knowledge base both current and covering a wide variety of techniques. Every birth is distinct and I have learned something from each experience. I bring this understanding with me when serving you during your labor and birth.
Being a professional doula requires that I value my time, energy, skills, and education. Living life on-call means I am available to clients 24 hours a day during your birth date window (38 weeks-42 weeks). This could mean missing special time with my family and having to schedule personal vacations around due dates. It is important for me to be available for my clients while they are laboring which includes being at my best for hours on end and paying for back-ups, if needed.
I am highly invested in my clients and take clients who are invested in their birth. If doulas do not charge what they are worth, then we fail our families, our clients, ourselves and other doulas who share in the profession.
*Research proves that many factors inhibit a person's access to adequate health care in the U.S. including race, ethnicity, immigration status, indigenous status, gender identity, sexual orientation, and income level. I believe maternal health is a human right. If you and your family are unable to pay these fees for such reasons, please contact me before thinking you can't have a doula.
Insurance Reimbursement
Every insurance policy is different, and some policies will cover doula services. There are tremendous health, and therefore cost-saving benefits to using a doula at your birth. I do not bill your health insurance provider or health savings account, but will provide an invoice so that you can request reimbursement along with research and letters from the attending midwife or doctor explaining how this service lead to such a cost savings for the company. Even if you do not think your insurance provider will cover a doula, it is worth trying and I highly encourage families to do it as it will encourage companies to consider covering doula services in the future.
